    • In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009, you had the ability to force a specific dimension value as being 'Fixed' for a respective General Ledger account number. In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, you also have the ability to accomplish the scenario of having a specific dimension value as being 'Fixed' for a respective General Ledger main account. However, the avenue towards accomplishing this in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 is different.

For information around how to accomplish a 'fixed' financial dimension value in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, review the Microsoft Dynamics AX Shared Financial Data Management white paper. Specifically, page 13 in the document includes discussion around the use of 'Fixed' financial dimension values in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

You can also view additional information on this topic in the AX Support blog.
    • In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009, you could share your General Ledger account numbers across companies through the setup of a unique virtual company configuration. In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, we have a Shared Setup configuration across legal entities that allow you to more easily share data across legal entities. It is important to understand the mapping of a Legal Entity to a Ledger, a Legal Entity's Ledger to a Chart of Accounts, and a Chart of Accounts to Account Structure(s). With having a better understanding of how Legal Entities, Ledgers, Chart of Accounts, Account Structures align to each other, you will have a better feel for the powerful financial dimension capabilities in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

For additional information around the mappings between Legal Entities, Ledgers, Chart of Accounts, Account Structures in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, review the Microsoft Dynamics AX Shared Financial Data Management white paper.
    • How to import exchange rate from external sources in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Consuming Web Services
    • In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, summary balances for a main account/financial dimension combination are not necessarily automatically updated during the posting logic. The setup of your financial dimension sets in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 control whether a main account/financial dimension combination's summary balance will be updated during the posting logic. If the Trial Balance list page doesn't appear to display the appropriate balances for a main account/financial dimension combination, you will want to check as to whether or not the 'Update balances during the posting process' option is marked for the financial dimension set for which you are viewing data for. If you do not have the 'Update balances during the posting process' option marked, you will need to continuously update balances on the financial dimension set in order for the main account/financial dimension combination's summary balances to be accurate in the Trial Balance list page.
    • Hide Specific Dimension Value in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012: Assume that you have a legal entity called CEU and a legal entity called CEED and both legal entities share the same Chart of Accounts which is called 'Corporate'. The 'Corporate' Chart of Accounts has two account structures: Account Structure (contains all Balance Sheet accounts); and Account Structure-PL (contains all P/L accounts). Both of these account structures are configured to use the Main account and a custom financial dimension value that I've created called BU, which represents a Business Unit. I then have Business Units setup as financial dimension values: ONE, TWO, THREE, and FOUR. In the CEU legal entity, all four of the BU financial dimension values should be available for use. However, in the CEED legal entity, I only want the BU financial dimension values of ONE, TWO, and THREE to be available for use. This means that for the CEED legal entity, I would like to prevent the use of the FOUR BU financial dimension value from being used. You can easily accomplish in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 through use of the 'Suspended' checkbox in the Financial dimension values form. The steps towards accomplishing this in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 using the scenario that I've outlined above include:
      • Go to General Ledger | Setup | Financial Dimensions | Financial Dimensions to open the Financial Dimensions form.
      • In the Financial Dimensions form, click on the BU financial dimension, and then click the Financial Dimension Values button to open the Financial dimension values form.
      • In the Financial dimension values form, click on the FOUR financial dimension value.
      • In the 'Select the level of dimension value to display' field, select Companies.
      • In the Companies(+) field, select the CEED legal entity.
      • In the Companies drop-down field, select the CEED legal entity.
      • Mark the 'Suspended' checkbox.
      • Close the Financial dimension values form.
When you now try to use the FOUR financial dimension value in the CEED legal entity on a transaction, an error message will appear stating "Dimension value FOUR is suspended."

    Best Practices

    Deleting the AXRetailPOS database

Deleting your AXRetailPOS database is not recommended. Treat this database in the same manner that you treat any other business critical data.

    N jobs vs. A jobs

N jobs push out all data from a table to the POS every time the N job runs. The N job clears the POS tables and replaces them with a fresh copy of Microsoft Dynamics AX data.

A jobs are more lightweight and only push changes, sending less data. Only new or updated records are sent to the POS when A jobs run.

For example A jobs are required if you want to send information to POS1 and not to POS2. In this scenario, if an N job were used, instead, both POS1 and POS2 would get all of the data. A jobs can also be used to send different sets of data to different stores.

    PCI compliance (IPSec)

By default, Commerce data exchange: Synch service is set to use IPSec to secure its communications for PCI compliance. If you want to use this, you must set up your network to support IPSec as well. You can disable IPSec in the Commerce data exchange: Synch service settings, but doing so would then require another form of communication security to be implemented to meet the PCI compliance requirements.

    Troubleshooting Tips

    Issue
    Solution
You need to run the N-job and they are timing out
Consider splitting up the job to decrease the connection update time. Complete the following steps to split the N-job:
    1. In the Scheduler job, select N-1040.
    2. Click on Functions and select Copy Scheduler Job.
    3. Give it a name such as N-1040-A.Highlight this job in the main grid.
    4. Select a subjob in the lower grid and click on the Red X in the toolbar to remove the subjob. Perform this action to decrease the number of tables this job updates.
    5. Run this new N-1040-A job and see if it completes successfully.
    6. Repeat Steps 2-7 to create as many jobs as necessary to complete all required subjobs.
When Creating the Offline Database it fails with the error "An error occurred while creating the database"
When running the seed data generation the job inserts “DataAreaID” to the field list on non-global tables. However, as the tables actually have the DataAreaID column defined, it inserts it twice.
    See Blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/axsupport/archive/2012/05/14/ax-2012-retail-creating-offline-database-fails.aspx
You can't launch the Retail Database utility and you get a DBServerUtil.exe - System Error "The program can't start because mfc100u.dll is missing from your computer"
One prerequisite is missing for the Commerce data exchange: Synch service (Store connect) installer. The Commerce data exchange: Synch service settings utility requires the Visual Studio C++ runtime to be installed. Click one of the following links to download the required package.
    See Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/axsupport/archive/2012/04/24/ax-for-retail-2012-store-connect-missing-mfc100u-dll-error.aspx
Maximum hop count has been exceeded Error messages stating that the maximum hop count has been exceeded means that the Commerce data exchange: Synch service (Store connect) has forwarded messages more times than is allowed by the maximum hop count setting.

Typically this occurs because of an incorrect service name entered into the Commerce data exchange: Synch service profiles in Microsoft Dynamics AX. This can lead to what would be an infinite loop of forwarding if the hop count check was not in place.

Verify that all service and server names are specified correctly in the Commerce data exchange: Synch service profiles in the Retail client. After these are corrected, try running the failed scheduler job again.
The A-Job was run in batch and one of the stores was offline during that process.  When the A-Job is run again, the store data for the store that was offline is not being updated.

A-Jobs use a timestamp as a marker to indicate the last time that the distribution schedule was run. The next time that this distribution schedule is run, only actions with a timestamp later than that marker will be processed

To update the data for the store that was offline at the time that the A-Jobs were run, go to the distribution schedule that failed, select the A-Job that failed and then click Scheduler log. Select the occurrence that failed and click Rerun scheduler job. Then select the store where you want to send the data.

    Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3

Coming in spring 2014 ... stay tuned.

    Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2

In the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Upgrade Guide, which provides end-to-end guidance for every stage of upgrade, we have arranged the content around upgrade scenarios that system administrators are likely to encounter. An advantage to using scenarios is the high-level view they afford. You’ll be able to see the big picture first, and then view the details through tables of linked tasks as you need them. The task topics can also be browsed alphabetically in a single reference section. The following scenarios are documented:

    • Upgrade Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 or AX 2009 to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 (all versions)
    • Perform in-place upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2
    • Perform in-place upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack
    • Upgrade a Retail system
    • Upgrade a country-specific system

The online upgrade documentation on TechNet, which is updated more frequently than the downloadable Upgrade Guide, now mirrors the same scenario-based structure.

Responding to your feedback about in-place upgrades (those between two different releases of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012),  the team has developed best practices that include a recommended upgrade topology. A new process diagram (available for download and suitable for printout as a poster) depicts this recommended approach. We expect it to be an aid to both the planning and execution of upgrades. You can explore the poster right now at Microsoft Zoom.It by clicking the image below:

  • Resource Page for Purchase Order Invoicing in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

This blog post summarizes common questions and answers about purchase order invoicing (PO invoicing). The following questions are included:

This blog post will be updated with additional questions. Add your question as a comment to the blog, or send email to adocs@microsoft.com.

Where is the documentation for PO invoicing?

If you’ve searched online for PO invoicing, you probably haven’t found much official documentation about it. That’s because the terminology changed in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. References to purchase order invoice were changed to vendor invoice. Search for vendor invoice AX 2012 to find the most up-to-date documentation.

Start with the following topics on TechNet:

Why are there extra journal entries for Purchase order expenditure, un-invoiced and Purchase expenditure for product when vendor invoices are posted?

Amounts are posted to these posting accounts when the product receipt is posted, and are then backed out when the invoice is posted. For more information, see the following white paper and blog posts:

Why are ledger entries missing after I post vendor invoices? (Hint: They’re not really missing…)

If a subledger journal is posted and the Transfer mode field in the General ledger parameters form is set to Batch or Asynchronous, the ledger entries might not be posted immediately after you click the Post button. For more information, see the following resources:

How does invoice matching work in the Vendor invoices form?

After invoice matching is set up, invoices are automatically matched when you enter or edit them in the Vendor invoices form. Invoice matching discrepancies are shown in the Invoice matching details form. For information about how to set up invoice matching, see the following topics on TechNet.

For information about how to resolve matching discrepancies or make corrections, see the following topics on TechNet.

The Financial I training manual explains invoice matching in “Chapter 10: Accounts Payable Daily Procedures.”

Can I use invoice matching with service items and category-based items, as well as stocked items?

You can set up two-way and three-way invoice matching for categories in the Category policy rule form. You might do this if you want to match the expected quantities and costs for services or other items that are not stocked.

    1. Click Procurement and sourcing > Setup > Policies > Purchasing policy.

    2. On the Action Pane, click Policy to create a new policy.

    3. Enter a name and select an organization node.

    4. On the Policy rules FastTab, select the Category policy rule type, and then click Create policy rule.

    5. In the Category policy rule form, click Add.

    6. Select a category, and then select a matching policy in the Category matching policy field. Select from the following options:

      • Company policy
      • Three-way matching
      • Two-way matching
      • Not required

What do I do if I get a message about pending invoices not being displayed?

Sometimes, an invoice might end up in a state where it has unsaved changes and you can’t edit it. If this happens, you’ll get the following message when you try to open the Vendor invoice form:

A pending invoice cannot be displayed because it is in use. If nobody else is working with the invoice, you can delete the unconfirmed changes to the invoice, and then you can modify the invoice. Use the Invoice history and matching details form or the Approval journal history and matching details form to delete the unconfirmed changes.

A pending invoice might be “in use” for one of three reasons:

    • Microsoft Dynamics AX stopped responding while you were working with the invoice. This is the most common reason for this message.
    • You already have the invoice open in another instance of the Vendor invoice form.
    • The invoice is in a batch that is waiting to be posted.

If the application stopped responding, you can delete the unsaved changes, and then modify the invoice. If you saved an earlier version of the invoice, you won’t have to start over. You will only have to enter the changes that haven’t been saved.

To delete the unsaved changes from a pending invoice, use the Invoice history and matching details form or the Approval journal history and matching details form.

Invoice history and matching details form

    1. Click Accounts payable > Inquiries > History > Invoice history and matching details.

    2. Select the purchase order, and then click Invoice.

    3. In the Invoice journal form, select the invoice that has unsaved changes.

    4. Click File > Delete Record.

Approval journal history and matching details form

    1. Click Accounts payable > Inquiries > History > Approval journal history and matching details.

    2. Select the purchase order, and then click Invoice.

    3. In the Invoice journal form, select the invoice that has unsaved changes.

    4. Click File > Delete Record.

Recover pending invoices that have unsaved changes

Beginning with Cumulative update 6 (CU6) for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, this message is replaced with a form that lets you delete pending invoices that have unsaved changes, so that you can continue to work with the invoice. For more information about CU6, see https://mbs2.microsoft.com/Knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b2850972.

How do I decide whether to use products or category hierarchies for procurement?

You can use categories, products, or both for procurement. To decide what to use, consider whether the product is for internal use or for resale; if you need hierarchical reporting for procurement and sales, retail, commodity codes, or derived financial hierarchies; whether the products will be used in manufacturing, and inventory reporting requirements. You should also be aware of differences in how categories and products are processed on purchase order lines and sales order lines, and how they work with two-way and three-way matching policies. For a detailed list of considerations, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh209418.aspx.

How do I create an invoice from posted product receipts?

The process depends on which version of Microsoft Dynamics AX you are using.

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack: The Add another product receipt and Retrieve product receipts controls are available in the Vendor invoice form. For more information about creating an invoice from posted product receipts in these versions, follow the instructions in the "Enter and match vendor invoices to product receipts" section of Key tasks: Vendor invoices

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2: In this release, the Add another product receipt and Retrieve product receipts controls were removed from the Vendor invoice form. To create an invoice that is based on posted product receipts in this version, follow these steps:

    1. Click Accounts payable > Common > Vendor invoices > Pending vendor invoices.

       - or -

Click Accounts payable > Periodic > Maintain vendor invoices.

    2. On the Action Pane, click From product receipts.

    3. In the Select product receipt form, select the Include check box for each product receipt that you want to include on the invoice.

    4. Click OK to create the invoice.

Where are the "Add another product receipt" and "Retrieve product receipts" buttons in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2?

In this release, the Add another product receipt and Retrieve product receipts controls were removed from the Vendor invoice form. Instead, you can create an invoice from posted product receipts by using the From product receipts button. For more information, see How do I create an invoice from posted product receipts?

    Resolution:

In the AOT, examine the macros node.  There should be AxdAdvancedLedgerEntryDCT and  AxdCustomerTransactionDCT macros in the node.  If you do not see these macros, then do a compare on the DataContainerTypes macro to make the macros visible.

    ----------------

Issue: When you enter Setup > Data import/export framework parameters you get the error message: "Assembly containing type Microsoft.Dynamics.AX.DMF.ServiceProxy.DmfEntityProxy is not referenced".

    Resolution:

    Create the structure c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.DynamicsAX.DMF.ServiceProxy\v4.0_1.0.0_31bf3856ad364e35\
and then paste the file Microsoft.Dynamics.AX.DMF.ServiceProxy.DLL, from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Data Import Export Framework Server Component\.

Restart the AOS, and compile into CIL.

    ----------------

Issue: Importing Ledger Dimensions in Data Import/Export Framework in AX 2012 R2 does not function. You get the message "Financial Dimension 0 does not exist" when importing ledger dimension values.

    Resolution:

    Contact support for a workaround.

    ----------------

    Issue:

Unable to select ODBC connections created as System DSNs. You get the message: “System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.”

    Resolution:

    Create a User DSN instead.

    ----------------

Issue: Creating a custom entity that imports to a table with a primary index that allows duplicates will import only one record.

    Resolution:

    Contact support for a workaround.

     Issue

     Solution

Reports that run for more than ten minutes time out.

See the Tips to help prevent long-running reports from timing out topic on TechNet.

I have upgraded SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. When I run the Microsoft Dynamics AX Setup wizard to install the Reporting Services extensions, it recognizes both SSRS 2012 and SSRS 2008 R2.

See the AX 2012 pre-requisite checker sees both the old SQL and the upgraded SQL instance blog post.

When printing a report that has been saved as a PDF file, the printer page size does not correspond to the PDF page size.

To resolve this issue, select the Choose paper source by PDF page size check box in the Print window that is displayed when printing the report to the printer.

When printing a report to a printer, the changes I made to the page layout orientation and paper size are not honored when the report is printed.

If you are using the initial release of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 or Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack: This is a known issue.

If you are using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2: Select the Override default settings check box. For more information, see Print or email a report.

The pagination of a report differs based on the tool used to view and print the report.

This is a known issue. For more information, see the Understanding pagination in Reporting Services topic on TechNet.

    Supported Services

The following services are included in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and are supported without modification in the Excel Add-in:

    • BudgetTransaction
    • EMSMeterReading
    • EMSSubstanceFlow
    • GeneralJournal
    • ProductionPickingList
    • ProjectHourJournals
    • SysImportBusSector
    • VendGroup
    • VendRequestSignup

You can add services to extend the scenarios where Excel can be used to update, create, and delete business data in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. For more information about how to add services, see Services and Application Integration Framework (AIF).

    Top

    Supported Tables

Not all tables presented in the Add tables dialog box can be used with the Office Add-in for Excel. Supported tables must meet the following requirements:

    • Visible identity: There must be a unique index on the table, which does not contain RecId as a component. This can be either the replacement key, or the primary index.
    • Valid references: All relations in the relations collection for the table that refer to other tables by means of the RecId must be related to tables that have a replacement key specified.

Document Services and the Office Add-ins

A document service is based on a query that defines its structure. Not all query structures are supported. Services that violate these rules can be added to the Document data sources form by an administrator, but will result in errors when accessed in the Office Add-in for AX 2012. For this reason, it is important that developers and administrators test services for use with the Office Add-in prior to adding the services to AX 2012. The restrictions on queries that form the basis of document services are as follows:

    • Replacement keys: The root level of the document service, also known as the parent data source, must have unique indexes other than RecId. This can be in the form of a non RecID primary index or a replacement key.
    • Related replacement keys: Each field within the service, which is a RecId-based foreign key, must relate to a table that has the specified replacement key.
    • Relationship direction: When a parent-child relationship exists in the underlying query that is associated with the service, only relationships originating with the child element and pointing to the parent can be used. For example, in the custCustomerService service, the custTable parent data sources holds a foreign key to the dirParty child data source. This pattern is not supported in the Excel Add-in.
    • Query and service consistency: Document services are based on an underlying query, which defines the data contract that is used in the service at the time that the service is generated. The Excel Add-in uses this query definition to perform a Read operation when refreshing data in the workbook. Because of this, any overrides to the read method, or extension of the schema beyond what is in the underlying query will not be reflected in the service.
    • View support: Views can be used within document services to provide a data model that is easier to read for users. However, the PrepareForXXXExtended methods must be implemented to properly handle information that is sent to the service within the views. Views can be used only as the leaf-level node in the underlying query. For instance, if there is a query Parent, child, grandchild, only the grandchild node can be a view.

These restrictions affect many services that are included with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. As a result of this, many services cannot be used with the Office Add-ins unless you make custom modifications to the underlying tables. For some of the more common services, particularly global address book services, Microsoft provides resource kits that you can use to import these structures into Microsoft Dynamics AX. Some of the common errors that might occur for requested services are listed in the following table.

    Top

    Common Service Errors

    Service

    Error

    Error Text

    Explanation

    BillOfMaterials

    Invalid Keys

Cannot load [AxdBillsOfMaterials]. The data   source [BOMVersion] does not have a valid replacement key or a primary index other than RecId.

The root of the underlying query has no visible means of identifying the BOMVersion recordbecause RecId is the only unique index.

    CustService

    Invalid Relation within the service

The relation between data source CustTable and data source DirParty contains an unsupported RecId relationship.

The parent data source custTable references the child data source dirParty. Child data sources must reference the parent for use with Excel Office Add-in.

    ExchangeRate

    Invalid relation outside the service

The relation between data source CurrencyPair and data source RateType contains an unsupported RecId relationship

The field CurrencyPair is a RecId-based relation to the Rate Type external table which has no replacement key specified.

    VendTable

    Invalid Relation within the service

The service [VendTableService] has surrogate foreign key expansion errors:

The table [VendTable] surrogate foreign key field [Party] does not have a reference data source.

The parent data source vendTable references child data source dirParty. Child data sources must reference the parent for use with Excel Office Add-in.

    Common Problems & Solutions

This section lists the most common issues encountered in CRM Connector for Microsoft Dynamics® AX and the solution recommended by the Microsoft Dynamics® AX Support team. Please note that there may be some different security settings depending on your domain policies. You may need to work with WCF resources for WCF related errors or problems.

    Issue

The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state, when testing the Adapter settings in the CRM connector tool

    Solution

This message is usually seen when the Dynamics AX 2012 CIL code and X++ code are not in sync. With no other users in the system and only one AOS instance running, complete the following steps:

    Full X++ compile
    Synchronize
    Full CIL generation

Resolve any errors that occur during the process, before moving on to any of the next steps.
After successfully completing the steps above, restart all AOS instances.
If you receive CIL errors, go back and compile the class in the error, look for any potential compile forward when extending code.

    Issue

Unable to connect when trying the use the Refresh Services button in the CRM Connector tool and when checking C:\ProgramData\Microsoft Dynamics\Connector for Microsoft Dynamics\Logs\Microsoft.Dynamics.Integration.Adapters.Ax2012.Configuration.log

You see the error Caught Exception: This operation is not supported for a relative URI near the end of the log file

    Solution

There is a conflict with Windows App Fabric SDK that is installed on the CRM connector machine. This issue is resolved in the RU 1 release of Connector, the workaround is to un-install Windows App Fabric SDK from Control Panel | Programs and features

Once you un-install the Windows App Fabric SDK you may encounter an additional error from entries not being fully removed from configuration files. The following blog post addresses this issue:
    http://justinlee.sg/2011/04/27/how-to-fix-this-error-configuration-binding-extension-system-servicemodelbindingsnettcprelaybinding-could-not-be-found/

The Windows App Fabric SDK gets installed with CRM, but is only used if you are doing CRM online application development. Windows App Fabric SDK is also installed with Rapid Start and may need to be moved to a different server for that functionality

Note: This issue will be corrected in the RU 1 release of the CRM connector for Dynamics AX 2012 due to release at the end of June 2012

    Issue

A call to SSPI failed, see inner exception error message when you test the connection in the CRM connector tool.

When you check C:\ProgramData\Microsoft Dynamics\Connector for Microsoft Dynamics\Logs\Microsoft.Dynamics.Integration.Adapters.Ax2012.Configuration.log you receive the error Caught Exception: Exception occurred on the metadata service on client or server. See exception details below: >A call to SSPI failed, see inner exception. near the end of the log file.

When you check the system event logs on the CRM connector machine you receive the following Kerberos error: The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server axAOSServer. The target name used was host/server. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client…..

    Solution

If you are getting an SSPI error the issue seems to be related to the Microsoft.Dynamics.Integration.Adapters.Ax2012.Configuration.exe.config. This file is located in the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\Microsoft Dynamics Adapter

This file contains an Identity servicePrincipalName value="host/localhost". These entries could be changed to remove the host/localhost and leave it blank as shown here:
    <servicePrincipalName value="" />

The original file has two places where it would to be changed to have the blank entry, below is the original file before any changes are made so you can find and remove the entries:
    <client>
    <endpoint address="net.tcp://localhost8201/DynamicsAx/Services/MetadataService"
    binding="netTcpBinding" bindingConfiguration="MetadataServiceEndpoint"
    contract="Microsoft.Dynamics.AX.Framework.Services.Metadata.Service.IAxMetadataService"
    name="MetadataServiceEndpoint">
    <identity>
    <servicePrincipalName value="host/localhost" />
    </identity>
    </endpoint>
    <endpoint address="net.tcp://localhost:8201/DynamicsAx/Services/QueryService"
    binding="netTcpBinding" bindingConfiguration="QueryServiceEndpoint"
    contract="Microsoft.Dynamics.AX.Framework.Services.QueryService.IQueryService"
    name="QueryServiceEndpoint">
    <identity>
    <servicePrincipalName value="host/localhost" />
    </identity>
    </endpoint>
    </client>

Note: This issue will be corrected in the RU 1 release of the CRM connector for Dynamics AX 2012 due to release at the end of June 2012

The default OLAP cubes that are provided with Microsoft Dynamics AX were designed with full license and configuration keys. When using License and Configuration Keys where all modules are not present, OLAP cubes will be need to be configured. If any license or configuration key is turned off, you must complete the procedures in the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 White Paper: Configuring the Default OLAP Cubes.

The Enterprise Portal Role center pages contain SSRS reports and SSAS default cubes. If you have not implemented the SSRS or have not completed your Dynamics® AX customizations you may want to consider removing the SSRS web parts from Enterprise Portal or selecting the Default Role Center which does not have BI content. Implementing the reporting features can be done at a later time after the main implementation is complete.

When setting up SSRS, SSAS, and WSS or MOSS on multiple severs you will need to be aware of how to set up and configure Kerberos Authentication. See the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 White Paper: Configuring Kerberos Authentication with Role Centers and the common problems section below.

    Issue

    Error trying to deploy reports
Microsoft Dynamics AX Reporting Project Deployment: ClrBridgeLoader: fatal error :
Microsoft.Dynamics.ClrBridge.dll cannot be loaded. Fatal error: ClrBridge is note loaded.

    Solution

Ensure you are trying to deploy reports from the SSRS server and that you can validate the SSRS server name in the Reporting Servers from within Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009. If this error appears right after installing the reporting extensions, launch the report deployment tool again.

    Issue

Enterprise Portal (EP) or SSRS Reports don’t run or stop working
An attempt has been made to use a data extension 'AXDATAMETHOD' that is not registered for this report server. (rsDataExtensionNotFound)
    or
    data extension 'AXQUERY' and 'AXADOMD'

    Solution

Installing or Reinstalling Reporting Extensions will resolve this issue. As a precaution make a Backup of:
    Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.<Instance>\Reporting Services\ReportServer folder

    Note
: SSRS updates or Service Packs may remove entries from rsreportserver.config file.

    Issue

Enterprise Portal (EP) Reports don’t run or stop working
A ProgressTemplate must be specified on UpdateProgress control with ID 'AxProgressControl'

    Solution

You can resolve the issue by using one of the three methods below:

    1. Apply the hotfix from KB957312 to the RTM version.
    2. Upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 SP1.
    3. Un-install Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 and reinstall Microsoft .NET 3.5 without SP1

    Issue

    Report deployment tool crashes
Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that the memory is corrupt

    Solution

If multiple versions of Dynamics AX are installed on the same server you will need to change your AX 2009 Path in your environment variables ahead of your AX 4.0 path to avoid running the wrong version of DLL’s

    Issue

    Error running reports
Error during processing of 'AX_CompanyName' report parameter. (rsReportParameterProcessingError).

    Solution

Process OLAP the cubes to supply data to the reports
    or
An incorrect Execution account has been specified in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager

Note: For SSRS 2008 the Business Connector proxy account is required to be the SSRS service account and for SSRS 2005 the Business Connector Proxy account should be running as the SSRS application pool in IIS. Also look at application event log for details on other issues.

    Issue

Enterprise Portal (EP) web site runs but not the reports in the EP web parts:
    Dynamics Adapter LogonAs failed
    or
    Microsoft.Dynamics.BusinessConnectorNet.LogonFailedException

    Solution

Leave the Execution account blank on SSRS 2005 or set to BC Proxy account on SSRS 2008 (Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 SP1 only)

Note: SSRS Execution account is set to an account other than BC Proxy Account

    Issue

EP or SSRS Reports don’t run or stop working
    Dynamics Adapter LogonAsGuest failed
    or
    FatalSessionException...

    Solution

The issue is caused by the Reporting Services web site set to anonymous Authentication. Changing the SSRS website to Integrated and/or un-marking Anonymous Authentication will resolve this issue.

    Issue

    Double Hop \ Kerberos Authentication
An Error has occurred while establishing as connection to the Analysis Server
    or
Reports don’t display in the EP website from a Client Browser not local to the IIS server
Cannot read information from SQL Server Reporting Services. Validate that the Report Manager URL is correct

    Solution

Setup Service Principle names (SPN) and Delegation to allow the passing of Kerberos certificate

    Issue

Office Data Connection (ODC) file deployment fails with SQL Server 2008
Microsoft Dynamics AX is searching for the SQL Server 2005 Microsoft.AnalysisServices.dll (v9.0.242.0)

    Solution

Apply one of the following hotfixes:

    • For Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 RTM: Apply the fix from KB957312
    • For Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 SP1: Apply the fix from KB960158

If the hotfix does not resolve the issue, make sure you are running a Dynamics AX 2009 client on the EP web server when deploying the ODC files. As a workaround you can manually deploy the ODC files by following these steps:

    1. Click here to download a new ODC file (Dynamics_AX.odc).
    2. Save the ODC on the SSAS server.
    3. Open the ODC file with Notepad or any other text editor.
    4. Edit the odc file with the following changes:
      Data Source=OLAPServerName
      Initial Catalog=OLAPDbName
Add SSPI=Kerberos after Initial Catalog if using Kerbersos (in red only required for Kerberos authentication)

      ….
      <odc:Connection odc:Type="OLEDB">
      <odc:ConnectionString>Provider=MSOLAP.3;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=True;
      DataSource=<Server1>;Initial Catalog=Dynamics AX;SSPI=Kerberos
      </odc:ConnectionString>
    5. Save the changed ODC file.
    6. Go to EP main site.
    7. Click Site Actions, and then click Site Settings.
    8. Under Galleries, click Master pages.
    9. Click View all site content (top left).
    10. Click Data Connections folder.
    11. Import the edited ODC file.

    Issue

"Client found response content type of 'text/html; charset=utf-8', but expected 'text/xml'"

    Solution

Ensure SSRS service is running and are able to connect to instance via SQL Server Management Studio.

Note: Additional information can be found in SSRS error log.

    Issue

    Exception from HRESULT: 0X80041FFF

    Solution

Change Visual Studio project location to local drive if using a network share

    Issue

The Analysis extension is not seeing the SQL cluster name for Analysis Services when Analysis services is setup on a SQL cluster.

You will get an error similar to this when trying to install Analysis Extension in this environment:

Connecting to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services on server 'SQL02' and instance 'MSOLAP$ANALYSIS'.
A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running.
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:2383
An error occurred while Setup was connecting to SQL Server Analysis Services instance 'MSOLAP$ANALYSIS' on server 'SQL02'.

An error occurred while Setup was connecting to SQL Server Analysis Services instance 'MSOLAP$ANALYSIS' on server 'SQL02'.

    Solution

The workaround is to manually run the script to create the Dynamics AX OLAP db from the AX 2009 CD.

Navigate to this folder: \support\Analysis Services\Scripts on the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 installation CD.
Then run the dynamicsax.xmla script from within SQL Management Studio (connected to the SSAS instance).

This script will create the Dynamics AX OLAP database.

    Issue

BC Proxy account fails to start for the SSRS reports in Enterprise Portal with RPC exception 5

When Enterprise Portal starts for the first time and displays SSRS reports, normally two Business Connectors are started. After a period of time or if the impersonated web user logs out for the SSRS Proxy account you may experience an RPC error 5 access denied and the SSRS reports will no longer display in Enterprise Portal.

    Example Event Type: Error
    Error:
Event Source: Dynamics .NET Business Connector 5.0
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 180
    Date: 10/7/2008
    Time: 6:21:04 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: AX2009
    Description:
Microsoft Dynamics AX Business Connector Session 18.

RPC error: RPC exception 5 in Ping occurred in session 36

    Solution

RPC error 5 can occur if the SSRS Execution account is set in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager. If the account used is the Business Connector proxy account the first startup of the Business Connector will work, but not any subsequent startups unless the IIS application pool if recycled or an IIS reset is done.

    SSRS 2005
Remove the SSRS execution account through Reporting Services Configuration Manager and ensure the Business Connector account is running the IIS Application Pool for the SSRS web site.

    SSRS 2008
Change the SSRS service to start as the Business Connector Proxy account and remove the SSRS execution account through Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
Note: Changing the SSRS account would require a change in the registered SPN’s if you are using Kerberos authentication

    Critical Hotfixes

The Dynamics AX kernel hotfixes are cumulative fixes that address issues in the executable and dll files for Dynamics AX. These hotfixes do not modify any X++ code, therefore they do not require full X++ code review when deploying to your environment. The kernel fixes are designed to address stability, performance, and compatibility with other software applications. When you apply a kernel hotfix you do want to do testing and the key areas to focus on are printing, pdf functionality, and integration points. When you apply a kernel hotfix you want to be sure that it is applied on all machines that have a Dynamics AX component, such as the client, AOS, or .Net business connector. If you do run into any issues with the Kernel hotfix you can safely remove the hotfix from the Programs and Features area of the Control Panel.

It is recommended that you consider regular installation of Kernel rollups in your Microsoft Dynamics AX environments. We find that many times when a customer is experiencing issues with the AOS that installing the latest Kernel hotfix resolves the issue. Therefore to assist our customers and partners with applying the Kernel hotfixes we have started to release the Kernel portion of the Rollup hotfixes for Dynamics AX 2009 as a separate download. This download will have "_BinaryOnly" in the file name. The one without "_BinaryOnly" contains both the Application and Kernel. This way customers can install just the Kernel portion of the Rollup hotfixes that we provide. Due to Rollup hotfixes receiving, more testing than a regular hotfix we recommend that you apply the latest kernel Rollup hotfix unless your issue has been resolved in a kernel hotfix since then. Here are the links to the latest kernel hotfix - To find the latest kernel Rollup see the Hotfix Rollups released for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 section of Hot Fixes Released for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009

To determine which Kernel rollup is currently applied to your AOS you can go to
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics AX\{Version Number}\Server\{Instance Name}\Bin and find the ax32Serv.exe file.
Right click on this file and select properties. Go to the details tab (version tab on Windows 2003 Server) and find the number for Product version. You can then use the website listed below to determine the service pack and rollup that you are running.

Overview of Dynamics AX build numbers

** Note: The path could include Program Files(x86) if your AOS is on a 64 bit machine and you have Dynamics AX 4.0

How to gather a crash dump/what information to provide to support

    Top

    Common Problems & Solutions

    • We have found that in a number of AOS crash cases they are resolved by installing the latest kernel hotfix. Therefore it is recommended that you consider implementing the latest kernel rollup as part of your maintenance. This could mean applying the latest kernel rollup once a quarter. Since the kernel hotfixes are cumulative, easy to uninstall, and do not include X++ fixes they are typically able to be installed with a lot less effort than an application hotfix. We do recommend that you apply the kernel rollup in a non-production environment and do some testing before applying it in your production environment. Please see the information from the AX Kernel Patching section on how to update to the latest kernel hotfix rollup.
    • If you implement code when users are in the system you could have cache or data access issues that result in an AOS crash. Therefore, when implementing code in your production environment it is recommended that you do so when users are not in the system. If you are going to import an xpo make sure that you shut down all but one AOS during the process. You may also want to consider then shutting down that last AOS, deleting the axapd.aoi file, and restarting one AOS so that the axapd.aoi file gets rebuilt.
    • Verify that all of your Microsoft Dynamics AX components are on the same build. We have found that if there are rpc call changes in a kernel build and a machine is inadvertently missed during the Kernel hotfix install that it can result in AOS crashes.
    • If possible separate each AOS by process/component. So for example if you use Dynamics AX clients, Enterprise Portal, and you heavily utilize batch processing you could have each of these connect to its own AOS.

    Troubleshooting Tips

    • KB 953375 - How to find a user ID that is associated with a session ID of a "RPC error: RPC exception 1726 occurred in session [SessionID]" error message in the Application log on the AOS server in Microsoft Dynamics AX
    • KB 953374 - You receive a warning message in the Application log on the AOS server in Microsoft Dynamics AX: "SPID [SPID_number] for Session Id [SessionID], is still present in the database. Please delete the SPID from the database"
    • KB 950802 - Error message in the Application log on a computer that is running Microsoft Dynamics AX Application Object Server: "RPC error: Client provided an invalid session ID [X]"
    • Setting to change after restoring the database.

Here are some events from the AOS machines application event that can be useful when managing an AOS:

    Event Log Entries

    How to Troubleshoot

Event ID 149. Object Server 01: Ready for operation

Use this to verify the AOS build/version information from the kernel build section.

    Event ID 172.

Use this to verify the .Net Business Connector build. This is helpful if you think the issue is related to components not being on the same build.

    Event ID 1000

Use this information along with any Event Id’s of 1001 to confirm the times when the AOS crashes.

    Event ID 1001

This indicates that they have the option marked to send mini memory dumps to the Watson site. Pass the contents of this event on to your Escalation Engineer so they can review it to see if there is information that points to the issue.

Object Server 01: RPC error: RPC exception 1726 occurred in session X

This means that the AOS had data to send back to the client but the client was no longer available. You can see this if users are ending task on the client when they think processes are hung. If the user does this repeatedly in a short time it can cause an AOS crash or it could point to a process that has a problem and causes an AOS crash. Follow the steps in blog on how to trace a session back to a user. This way you can try to determine the process the user was doing and possibly trace that process.

Object Server 01: No ping from XX. Terminating the session

This error message occurs when the AOS tries to ping the client and does not get a response.

Object Server 01: SPID XX for session id XX is still present in the database. Please delete the SPID from the database.

This means that the SQL Server is still processing data from a client session that was terminated. Especially if you see these right before a crash find out the user that this session belongs to using the steps from blog. This will help you determine the user who had a process running but was no longer in the Dynamics AX client. Find out the process they were running, if possible, and try to trace that process or see if you can reproduce an AOS crash.

Object Server 01: Internal version mismatch. Microsoft Dynamics AX Client from MACHINENAME (0.0.0.0) tried to attach with 5.0.1500.4622 revision of AOS kernel."

This indicates that the AOS and the client builds do not match and can cause problems. This message was added to kernel build 5.0.1500.4622 and higher. The amount of detail returned will depend if the client is also at that version or above. Check the sysuserlog table for the buildnum and computername of clients connecting from an earlier build than the AOS. Example: select distinct(BUILDNUM) from SYSUSERLOG where CREATEDDATETIME > '2011-01-01'

    Common Problems & Solutions

    Issue

The setup fails to deploy the Microsoft Dynamics AX site template if not licensed for EN-US.

In the DynamicsSetup.txt file, you find the following error:

Creating new Enterprise Portal Site with following the parameters:\n URL: http://server/sites/DynamicsAX\n Title: Enterprise Portal Site\n LCID: 1033\n OwnerLogin: domain\user Administration Web Service URL: http://server:44901/_layouts/ep/WSSAdmin.asmx Error: The site /sites/DynamicsAX could not be created. The following exception occured: File or arguments not valid for site template 'AXSITEDEF#0'..

An error occured while Setup was creating a new site. Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown.

File or arguments not valid for site template 'AXSITEDEF#0'
Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown.

    Solution

This issue is solved by applying the hotfix available in KB 960048.

Note: If the Enterprise Portal installation still fails with the same error after applying KB 960048, recompile the SysEpDeployment class on a computer where the Microsoft Dynamics AX Client and the .NET Business Connector are both installed.

    Issue

The setup fails if the .NET Business Connector is not installed on the Microsoft Dynamics AX client computer in which the initialization checklist is run.

If the .NET Business Connector is not installed on the Microsoft Dynamics AX client when the initialization checklist is run, the SysDevelopmentProxy class does not get compiled. If SysDevelopmentProxy class is not compiled, then setup fails to install Enterprise Portal.

In the DynamicsSetup.txt file, you find the following error:
In SysEPDeployment::clrGenerateProxies... Error executing code: SysDevelopmentProxy (object) has no valid runable code in method 'generate'.

    Solution

This issue is solved by applying the hotfix available in KB 971185.

Additionally, there is the following workaround:

    1. Manually compile the SysDevelopmentProxy class:
      • Start the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 Client on a computer where the .NET Business Connector is also installed.
      • Open the AOT window.
      • Expand the Classes node.
      • Locate the SysDevelopmentProxy class.
      • Right-click at the class, and then choose Compile from the context menu.
    2. If the manual compile does not work, then rebuild the axapd.aoi and then repeat the manual compile. br>

    Issue

The setup fails when the installer uses the NETBIOS domain name instead of the fully qualified domain name

In the DynamicsSetup.txt file, you find the following error:

    Entering method UpdateBusinessConnectorProxyAccount
An error has occured while Setup was establishing a connection through Business Connector.
    Error: Dynamics Adapter CallStaticClassMethod failed.
    Leaving method UpdateBusinessConnectorProxyAccount

The Microsoft Dynamics AX installer reads the .NET Business Connector Proxy account from the System Service Accounts form and truncates the fully qualified domain name (FQDN), to the NETBIOS name. If NETBIOS is not configured on the domain the then the Business Connector Proxy account will not be authenticated and the installer will fail.

    Solution

Blank out the Business Connector Proxy account in the System Service Accounts form. Run the installer again and you will be allowed to enter in the fully qualified domain name (FQDN)

Note: A similar issue can occur if the Business Connector account stored in the Microsoft Dynamics AX database is using the NETBIOS name and the application pool is using the fully qualified name or vise versa. Make both accounts match using format stored in the Microsoft Dynamics AX database.

    Issue

The setup fails and the IIS worker process crashes if AMO is not installed.

In the DynamicsSetup.txt file, you find the following error:br>
An Existing Connection was forcibly closed by remote host

    Solution

The IIS/EP server requires AMO objects to be installed. Install the AMO objects and run setup again.

Refer to the Install prerequisites for Enterprise Portal and Role Centers page on TechNet for SQL specific version downloads of the SQL Server Analysis Management Objects (AMO)

    Issue

Opening Manage Deployments form generates error when using the 64bit version of WSS

If you have Windows SharePoint Services(WSS) and the .NET Business Connector installed as 64bit versions, you cannot use the 32bit Microsoft Dynamics AX Client to deploy or update Enterprise Portal sites.

When you try to open the Manage Deployments form you receive the following error message:

Manage Deployment cannot be run because Enterprise Portal is not deployed on this computer.

    Solution

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 Service Pack 1 has a new command line utility, AxUpdatePortal.exe, that gets installed in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics AX\50\Setup folder that serves this purpose. More information on this utility is available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd261467.aspx

You can execute the utility with the following command line parameters to update all local Enterprise Portal sites:

    AxUpdatePortal.exe -updateWebSites -iisreset

Note: On Windows Server 2008 make sure you run AxUpdatePortal.exe from an elevated command prompt. To open an elevated command prompt, click Start, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. More information available on these blogs:

    MSDN (public)
Dynamics AX Partner Forum (login required)

Please be aware that there is a hotfix KB974767, which will check if you are running AXUpdatePortal in admin mode.

    Issue

401 Error on a web site that has Host Headers configured

When .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is installed and the IIS web site has a Host Header configured, the following error occurs:

The Web site http://server/sites/Dynamics AX was not created correctly.
The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

    System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Portal.Deployment.EPFeatureReceiver.CreateAxSitesAndPages(SPWeb site)
    at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Portal.Deployment.EPFeatureReceiver.ProvisionAxSite(SPWeb site)

    Solution

The release of .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 introduced changes to NTLM authentication for HTTPWebRequest. More information on this change is available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc982052.aspx The changes in .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 include a loopback check security feature that is designed to help prevent reflection attacks on your computer. Therefore, authentication fails if the FQDN or the custom host header that you use does not match the local computer name.

The changes in .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1makes it necessary to configure the BackConnectionHostNames registry to match the Host Header name on the IIS web site. Adding a registry value tells Windows that the Host Name used in the request is a valid alternate name for the local computer. Refer to one of the Related Articles for detailed steps for editing the BackConnectionHostNames registry key. After making the change in the Registry, reboot the server and repeat Enterprise Portal install.

    Troubleshooting Tips

    1. NET Business Connector session could not be found.

      Possible reasons for this issue:
      • The .NET Business Connector is not installed
      • The wrong version of the .NET Business Connector is installed
      • The .NET Business Connector non-interactive configuration is wrong
      • The application pool does not match the .NET Business Connector account stored in the Microsoft Dynamics AX database (See issue above)
      • In some environments the application pool must match the FQDN, which is stored in the Microsoft Dynamics AX database. (i.e… local.net\BCProxy vs. local\BCProxy )
      • You may need to blank out the .NET Business Connector in the AX database and enter the account in the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 installer.
      • The proxy classes are not compiled in the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 client on a machine where the .NET Business Connector is installed (see sysdevelopmentProxy issue above).
      • Missing Business Connector or EP Framework license keys.
    2. The 404 error generally means the site creation did not complete successfully.

      Possible reasons for this issue:
      • The application pool is not using the .NET Business Connector proxy account
      • The user who is creating the site does not have the proper permission in Microsoft Dynamics AX
      • The user with being given administrator privileges on the web site being created (in the create site UI) does not have permission in the proper permissions in Microsoft Dynamics AX. The Microsoft Dynamics AX user account should be logged into the server and not only logged into SharePoint Central Admin webpage.
      • The Master page for Microsoft Dynamics AX is not available in the site definition (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates\AXSITEDEF\defaultax.master).

    Critical Hotfixes

Most of the Critical Workflow hotfixes are included in Rollup 4 (RU4) or higher; To find the latest Rollup see Hot Fixes Released for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009

The following KB articles can be applied separately, but it is recommended to move to the latest Rollup Hotfixes.

    • KB973439 - The workflow keeps retrying when a time-out exception error occurs in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 with Service Pack 1 installed
    • KB973492 - Only one workflow works when you run several workflows on a single form in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009
    • KB971260 - A workflow record is stuck in a pending status in a batch queue in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009
    • KB2398999 - Workflow fails intermittently when two AOS instances are marked to process workflow batch groups and change in AOS configuration requires restart .

      Details:
The symptom of KB 2398999 can also be identified as performance issues when messages are left in the workflowmessagetable. In order to determine if this is the case, you should run the following SELECT statement:

Select * from WORKFLOWMESSAGETABLE where MESSAGELIFECYCLESTATE =1 and MESSAGETYPE =15

If a larger number (1000+) of records are returned then the above hotfix is required. To fully resolve the issue you need to remove the current records and apply KB 2398999, which will prevent any new orphaned records from getting stuck in queue. Use the following SQL statement to remove the orphaned records.

Delete from WORKFLOWMESSAGETABLE where MESSAGETYPE =15
Note: If you need to debug workflow code running in batch, Critical Kernel hotfixes for Batch processing and fixes for debugging workflow in batch are included in kernel Rollup Hotfix (RU6 Binary only download) or higher.

    Common Problems & Solutions

This section lists the most common issues encountered in Workflow for Microsoft Dynamics® AX and the solution recommended by the Microsoft Dynamics® AX Support team. Please note that there may be some different setting required for installing workflow with IIS 6.0, IIS 7.0, or IIS 7.5. You may need to work with IIS resources for IIS related errors or problems.

    Issue

Workflow documents are not processing in a development/ test environment after restoring the database or in a production environment after changing batch or AOS server configuration.

    Solution

The server setup, batch groups, and Workflow URL may be incorrect and would need to be changed for the new Environment.

See Checking Database entries after restoring a Microsoft Dynamics 2009 SQL Database to another Domain or Environment

    Issue

See Unable to validate the AX 2009 Workflow Webservice URL

    Solution

Use this information along with any Event Id’s of 1001 to confirm the times when the AOS crashes.

    Issue

When I manually browse any aspx pages in the Workflow virtual directory I get a HTTP Error: 404.17

    Solution

See Troubleshoot Error 404.17 - Not Found

    Troubleshooting Tips

If you are testing workflow and do not wish to wait for the batch job to process, you may run the workflow tutorial instead. To do this in Microsoft Dynamics AX go to AOT | Forms | Tutorial_WorkflowProcessor. DO NOT use the Tutorial_WorkflowProcessor in production as you can inadvertently remove records from queue if you click the Clear button.

Settings to change after restoring the database.

    Deployment Recommendations:

    • Create a dedicated batch group for workflow and use the workflow configuration to set the batch jobs to the new batch group
    • If you have high volume or time sensitive workflows you may want to dedicate an AOS server to process the workflow batch tasks
    • If you are developing a custom workflow process be sure to add code to not allow a delete on the transactional record, while there are active workflows in process. Doing so can orphan the workflow records and cause performance issues

Long processing times for workflow batch jobs

There may be times when the workflow batch jobs are taking longer than normal to process workflow documents where user assignments are made.  This can happen when old workflows are left in the system and not completed or are canceled.  The following SQL statements can be used to help identify this issue and aid you in locating the documents that may need to be cancelled.

    • The following SQL statement will check for a wide recid variance that may cause performance issues:

Select MAX(recid)-MIN(recid) from WORKFLOWMESSAGETABLE where MESSAGELIFECYCLESTATE = 1

      Notes:
      • If you get NULL as a result this indicates there is nothing in the queue to be processed/
      • If you get a very high number then it may take several passes of the workflow batches to process all the records in the queue.
      • If you have very old records in the queue you may want to check the status of the document and cancel it if needed to get rid of the wide variance.
    • The following SQL statement will return the workflowcontextrecid, workflowcontexttableid of the records currently in queue

select workflowcontextrecid, workflowcontexttableid, WORKFLOWCORRELATIONID, * from WORKFLOWMESSAGETABLE where MESSAGELIFECYCLESTATE = 1
    • The following SQL statement will return the table ID and the table name of the document source for workflow documents in queue

select tableid, name from SQLDICTIONARY where fieldid = 0 and tableid in (select workflowcontexttableid from WORKFLOWMESSAGETABLE where MESSAGELIFECYCLESTATE = 1)

Note Use the results of the above SQL table name to look at the recid in the source document table.
    • The following sample SQL statement returns the underlying source document to check if the workflow should be canceled or deleted

select * from PURCHREQTABLE where RECID = '5637144826'
    • Use the following SQL statement to return the record in the workflow history form, find the  WORKFLOWCORRELATIONID from the InstanceNumber from the WORKFLOWMESSAGETABLE, and then and use that GUID in the CORRELATIONID of the WORKFLOWTRACKINGSTATUSTABLE WORKFLOWCORRELATIONID

select INSTANCENUMBER,* from WORKFLOWTRACKINGSTATUSTABLE where CORRELATIONID = 'C1919766-6C63-42DC-92E8-6B3FD1D8BDC0'

Note Once you know the instance Number filter in the Workflow tracking table, you can then cancel the workflow process and make sure all records process out of the queue before testing newly submitted ones.
